Ryan Wertz2016 State Supervisor of the Year
Ryan T. Wertz, Lead Consultant for World Languages & International Education with the Ohio Department of Education, has been named the 2016 State Supervisor of the Year by the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) in Boston, on November 16, 2016.
Ryan Wertz has served as the treasurer, president-elect, president, and currently as the immediate past president of NCSSFL; and serves in an advisory capacity on the Board of the Ohio Foreign Language Association (OFLA). “Everyone from students, to teachers, to administrators, to university faculty, has been impacted and touched in some way by the outstanding leadership, service and advocacy that Ryan has tirelessly and selflessly completed.” In addition to supporting K–12 educators in Ohio, he serves as the NCSSFL representative in the U.S. China Strong Initiative, working with Asia Society and College Board to promote the study of Chinese in the United States.
Before joining ODE, Ryan spent the better part of a decade as an elementary, middle and high school Spanish teacher. He attributes his personal love of language and culture learning to the rich experiences he had while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines and Panama and working as a Peace Corps trainer in Costa Rica. Since 2003, the NCSSFL State Supervisor of the Year award has been awarded to acknowledge an outstanding world language state supervisor whose leadership has had a profound impact at the state level and beyond. The award was sponsored this year by Middlebury Interactive Languages.
