6.3 Formative Assessments

Formative assessments are on-going, continuous “snapshots” of knowledge and skills used for multiple purposes in monitoring progress, providing student feedback, modifying curriculum, and adjusting plans for new classroom learning experiences. The purpose is to gather information and focus on practice. The teacher facilitates learning and the students reflect on their individual learning process.

Formative assessments include many of the learning tasks students do on a daily basis, such as:

  • Participating in dialogues or spontaneous conversations
  • Role-playing specific situations
  • Writing short descriptions
  • Interpreting messages

Formative assessments are ongoing, frequent, usually brief, and not very formal. They are used to guide and improve instruction and learning, and are usually not graded.
