4.5 Activity 2: Assessing Interpersonal Communication
Using the handout linked below, look at the can-do statements about interpersonal communication adapted from the European Language Portfolio. For your convenience, the chart below is also provided on the handout. Decide how you would rate your speaking skills using your second or third language. This list looks at one aspect of communicative competency with oral language.
Planning, compensating, and repairing: Procedures for successful interpersonal communication
This list is adapted from the European Language Portfolio and uses the proficiency levels from the CEFR’s Common Reference Levels: Global Scale table referred to in Module 1.
Level
Descriptor with Can-do Statement
C1/C2
Can substitute an equivalent term in an unnoticeable manner
B2
Can use circumlocution and paraphrase
B1
Can foreignize a mother-tongue word and ask for confirmation
A2
Can use an inadequate word and use a gesture to clarify
Note that once again there is no A1 descriptor because learners at that level of competency are not able to apply these skills when communicating with others.

Group: If you are working with a partner or in a group, discuss how your students might situate themselves and compare ideas about how you as the teacher could help them begin to set their own goals for improvement.
Individual: If you are training alone, think about how your students might situate themselves and how you as the teacher could help them begin to set their own goals for improvement.
