4.10 Activity 6: Creating Can-Do Statements as Part of Learning Activities

Using the handout linked below, you will choose a topic appropriate for your language learners and create an activity accompanied by four or five can-do statements.

If you teach a language other than English in a traditional language setting, dual immersion, or heritage language instruction, choose one of the following topics and create an activity accompanied by four or five can-do statements. Remember the four criteria needed to develop effective can-do statements. Begin with the easiest task and increase the complexity at each step.

  • Going to the movies
  • Shopping
  • Eating in a restaurant
  • Seeking a job

If you teach English language learners, choose the topic for your specific grade level below and create an activity accompanied by four or five can-do statements. Remember the four criteria needed to develop effective can-do statements.

  • Grades K–2: Earth and Sky
  • Grades 3–5: Cost and Money
  • Grades 6–8: Natural Disasters
  • Grades 9–12: Character Development

Creating can-do statements for LinguaFolio-like activities (pdf, word)

1.Choose a topic from the appropriate list above.
2.Create the activity you will use with your class. Some possible activities include:

  • Think-Pair-Share
  • Partner or group work
  • Role-play
  • Application cards
  • KWL Charts
  • Learner logs
  • Admit and exit slips

3.Create four or five can-do statements to accompany your activity.
