2.9 Benefits of Self-Assessment

What are the benefits of self-assessment?

The can-do statements used in self-assessment clearly express what students will be able to do in simple terms that are understandable to students, parents, and employers. Progress becomes more transparent to everyone with the can-do statements and self-assessment grid.

Self-assessment helps learners understand how they learn and identify learning strategies based on their learning styles. Students identify learning strategies that help them learn the vocabulary in written and spoken language. This is illustrated by conclusions drawn by students during the pilot, such as “I learn vocabulary better when I group words by themes.”
Self-assessment helps teachers individualize their lessons based on the goals the students have identified. Self-assessment gives teachers the necessary information to choose activities that match the different learning styles of their students.

Self-assessment is not always easy. Teachers should guide learners in an intentional, step-by-step process so they learn how to evaluate their own learning styles. This includes teacher-modeling and peer- and teacher-assessment. Assessments do not have to be lengthy, but frequency and inclusion with instruction are major factors.
