Become a Member of NCSSFL

There are three classes of membership: regular SEA, associate and retired.

Regular SEA

Those eligible for regular SEA membership are state education agency (SEA) personnel whose area of responsibility includes world language education and the implementation of state policies for languages other than English of any state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia, and the possessions of the United States of America. If a regular SEA member of NCSSFL cannot attend the annual NCSSFL meeting, he/she may appoint someone in his/her SEA to represent him/her. Additionally, directors/administrators within a SEA who were formerly responsible for world language education and who are currently responsible for the oversight of personnel and programs related to world language education are eligible for regular membership.

Regular SEA members shall have full voting privileges.

Associate

Those eligible for associate membership include the following:

  1. representatives of the United States Department of Education agency personnel with responsibility for world language education;
  2. representatives of national professional organizations that are advocates for world language education from the United States and other countries;
  3. state and national level policymakers whose work includes world language education and/or international education;
  4. a person designated by the SEA in collaboration with the state world language association may serve as the NCSSFL representative for that state if, within the SEA, there is no one with responsibility for world language education. An official letter from the SEA is required to confirm the designee; and
  5. individuals who have been NCSSFL members in good standing for at least one year prior to a change of employment, who are currently working in the arena of world language education at either a public or private educational institution, and who support the mission of NCSSFL. However, individuals who are employed on a regular basis by commercial vendors such as textbook publishers, educational materials developers, or assessment companies are not eligible for membership.

Associate members shall not have voting privileges.

Retired

Those eligible for retired membership are persons who have held regular SEA membership in NCSSFL and who have retired from positions in the SEA. Retired members who work in a part-time consultative capacity are eligible for continued membership. However, individuals employed as consultants on a regular basis by commercial vendors are not eligible for membership.

Retired members shall have full voting privileges.
