Become a Member of NCSSFL
There are three classes of membership: regular SEA, associate and retired.
Regular SEA
Those eligible for regular SEA membership are state education agency
(SEA) personnel whose area of responsibility includes world language
education and the implementation of state policies for languages other
than English of any state of the United States of America, the District
of Columbia, and the possessions of the United States of America. If a
regular SEA member of NCSSFL cannot attend the annual NCSSFL meeting,
he/she may appoint someone in his/her SEA to represent him/her.
Additionally, directors/administrators within a SEA who were formerly
responsible for world language education and who are currently responsible
for the oversight of personnel and programs related to world language
education are eligible for regular membership.
Regular SEA members shall have full voting privileges.
Associate
Those eligible for associate membership include the following:
- representatives of the United States Department of Education agency personnel with responsibility for world language education;
- representatives of national professional organizations that are advocates for world
language education from the United States and other countries;
- state and national level policymakers whose work includes world language education
and/or international education;
- a person designated by the SEA in collaboration with the state world language
association may serve as the NCSSFL representative for that state if, within
the SEA, there is no one with responsibility for world language education.
An official letter from the SEA is required to confirm the designee; and
- individuals who have been NCSSFL members in good standing for at least one
year prior to a change of employment, who are currently working in the arena
of world language education at either a public or private educational institution,
and who support the mission of NCSSFL. However, individuals who are employed on
a regular basis by commercial vendors such as textbook publishers, educational
materials developers, or assessment companies are not eligible for membership.
Associate members shall not have voting privileges.
Retired
Those eligible for retired membership are persons who have held regular SEA membership
in NCSSFL and who have retired from positions in the SEA. Retired members who work
in a part-time consultative capacity are eligible for continued membership. However,
individuals employed as consultants on a regular basis by commercial vendors are not
eligible for membership.
Retired members shall have full voting privileges.
