A key component of LinguaFolio® are the 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, which represent the culmination of a collaborative effort between NCSSFL and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) to connect NCSSFL’s LinguaFolio® with ACTFL’s Proficiency Guidelines 2012 and the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. The combining of these three documents into a single, cohesive set of statements helps clarify how a language learner’s performance points toward a specific proficiency level.

The Can-Do Statements serve as a learner self-assessment tool to demonstrate to learners what they need to do to function at a specific level of proficiency and to set personal goals. The statements also help educators plan curriculum, units of instruction, and daily lessons to give learners the many opportunities necessary to perform at any targeted level of proficiency. Through multiple opportunities to show what they “can do” in classroom formative and summative assessments, unit by unit, learners collect the evidence that demonstrates a specific proficiency sub-level or level.
The proof that a learner has reached any proficiency level can only occur through an independent assessment of proficiency, but the 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements provide a tool for learners to chart their progress as well as to set goals and for educators to organize and support the learning, especially when they are used as part of LinguaFolio®.
